Seniors Program

The Senior Program was designed in accordance with FAHSI’s mission of improving the social conditions and enhancing the self-reliance of vulnerable segments of the Filipino American community in New York. Through various informational and skills workshops, trainings, and referrals, the Program  assists financially-limited seniors in gaining better access to social and health services. In addition, the Program creates opportunities for the seniors to improve their physical and mental health, and gives them a safe space for social interaction and recreational activities. FAHSI practices culturally responsive communication with its participants; Senior Program services are conducted in Tagalog, the main dialect in the Philippines, and English.
The Program offers the following services:

  • Informational Workshops. Participants learn how to develop their economic independence, as well as become more educated regarding their legal rights and public benefits. They are also taught ways of dealing with life stressors and social isolation.
  • Skills Trainings. Participants are encouraged to improve self-reliance and creativity through workshops on arts and crafts, cooking, as well as financial management or budgeting.
  • Empowerment Workshops. The seniors engage in discussions concerning health and fitness, self-defense, and self-affirmation.
  • Cultural Performances. The seniors actively participate in cultural production numbers that feature Filipino folk songs and dances.
  • Intergenerational Activities. The participants are joined by their grandchildren in activities that celebrate Filipino culture and traditions, as a way of enriching the relationship between Filipino elders and the younger generation.
  • Social Dancing. Through ballroom dancing and line dancing, participants enjoy their leisure time, release stress, and develop friendships.
  • Field trips. The seniors enjoy an occasional tour of a local attraction.
